Delta SkyMiles Turns Customer Loyalty Into Employee Recognition

Delta SkyMiles, launched in 1981, is one of the world’s longest-running airline loyalty programs. With membership estimated to exceed 100 million1, its scale is remarkable. But SkyMiles’ significance goes beyond its size. Over more than four decades, the program has evolved from a traditional mileage scheme into a broader customer engagement ecosystem, demonstrating how loyalty programs can move beyond transactions to create recognition, belonging, and deeper connections between brands and customers.

Members earn SkyMiles through Delta flights, Delta SkyMiles American Express credit cards, partner brands, and Delta’s SkyTeam airline partners. Since 2015, the program has used a revenue-based earning model, rewarding members based on spend rather than distance flown. Members progress through Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Medallion tiers based on Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs), with each tier unlocking additional benefits. Above Diamond sits Delta 360°, an invitation-only recognition reserved for Delta’s highest-value customers.

Putting employee recognition in customers’ hands

When a member reaches Diamond Medallion, Delta sends a welcome package celebrating their achievement. It includes two premium metal luggage tags and four Above & Beyond recognition certificates from Delta’s employee recognition program, Job Well Done.

A Diamond member carries the certificates while travelling. When a Delta employee delivers exceptional service, the member can write a personal thank-you note and present the certificate. The employee redeems the unique code through Delta’s internal recognition platform and receives 500 Job Well Done reward points, which can be exchanged for rewards including gift cards, merchandise, or SkyMiles.

But the value of the program goes far beyond the points.

Delta has put employee recognition in the hands of its most loyal customers. Instead of recognition flowing only from the company to employees, members are empowered to personally acknowledge the people who make their journeys better. This connects customer loyalty with the people who deliver the experience.

It sends a clear message to frontline employees: we care about you as much as you care about us.

Why recognition from customers matters

Recognition from customers carries a different emotional weight. Employees receive appreciation directly from the people they serve, connected to a specific moment where they made a difference.

Delta employees describe receiving these certificates as highly meaningful. While the 500 reward points are appreciated, the recognition itself represents a powerful marker of performance. Employees who receive the most certificates are invited to special awards events celebrating their achievements.

The program also creates value for members. Research shows that expressing gratitude benefits the person giving it as well as the person receiving it.2 By giving members a simple way to express appreciation, Delta turns gratitude into another dimension of the loyalty experience.

Expanding the recognition experience

The initiative has continued to grow. Platinum Medallion members now receive two Above & Beyond certificates each year, and during Delta’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2025, the program was extended to eligible Delta 360°, Diamond, and Platinum members through commemorative Job Well Done certificates.

The result was thousands of additional moments of appreciation between customers and frontline employees.

Delta’s approach demonstrates how loyalty programs can create value beyond rewards and retention. By giving members a role in recognising employees, Delta transforms loyalty from a relationship between a brand and a customer into a shared experience between customers, employees, and the moments they create together.
