JB Hi-Fi Perks

Editor’s note, May 2026: This JB Hi-Fi Perks review now reflects current member benefits, coupons and offer structure.

JB Hi-Fi was established in 1974 by Mr. John Barbuto (JB), trading from a single store in East Keilor, Victoria. He had one simple philosophy: to deliver a specialist range of Hi-Fi and recorded music at Australia’s lowest prices.

JB Hi-Fi launched its loyalty program, JB Hi-Fi Perks, in November 2022. The program is available nationwide and gives members access to coupons, member discounts and early sale notifications.

The fact that JB Hi-Fi stayed away from a loyalty program for so long is likely because of margins and its low-price positioning.

However, customer data has become more important for retailers. That may have helped drive JB Hi-Fi to build its member database through JB Hi-Fi Perks.

Joining JB Hi-Fi Perks

Anyone who wants to join JB Hi-Fi Perks must have a JB Hi-Fi account. Once the account has been created, members can add their birth month and mobile number for verification. It’s a simple sign-up process, which suits JB Hi-Fi’s no-fuss brand.

JB Hi-Fi Perks member benefits

Members can access the perks in the graphic below as part of the program:

JB Hi-Fi Perks benefits

JB Hi-Fi has allowed members to store receipts in their online account for quite some time already.

However, the other perks were new and exciting when the program launched. As it stands, the main drawcard for members remains the $10 Perks coupon for joining the program.

Members receive the coupon by email, with clear instructions on how to redeem online or in-store. Offering a welcome voucher is a great way to increase the member base, which should lead to more sales and increased revenue.

Members can also receive a birthday coupon. It is fantastic that JB Hi-Fi offers a coupon instead of a vague birthday message. This is one of the 12 ways to offer a memorable birthday benefit.

Since joining the program in November 2022, the exclusive member discounts I received were often generous. Some offered 50% off selected products. However, I never considered buying any of the products included in those communications. I also did not click on those products while browsing the website, because they were not relevant to me.

Since JB Hi-Fi has my receipt data, the expectation is that they know what I’m buying.

As loyalty consultants, we know one way to keep members engaged with the program. JB Hi-Fi could use past purchases to make exclusive member discounts feel more personalised.

JB Hi-Fi regularly provides generous discounts to anyone, regardless of whether they are a member. At launch, the discounts for JB Hi-Fi Perks members were sometimes only slightly better.

One early example was a $40 discount for Perks members on eligible purchases over $300. Customers outside the program could still get a discount, but it was reduced to $30.

Providing members with better discounts over time will demonstrate more value. They will also be more likely to stay engaged over the longer term.

How JB Hi-Fi Perks has developed

JB Hi-Fi Perks has now moved beyond its launch phase.

The program still appears focused on simple member value. Members receive access to coupons, offers and early sale notifications. This fits the JB Hi-Fi brand. Members do not need to understand points, tiers or complex earn rules. They join, receive coupons and get access to offers. That simplicity suits a retailer known for price, range and urgency. However, the opportunity is still personalisation.

If the offers become more relevant, JB Hi-Fi Perks could become much more useful.

Gamification

JB Hi-Fi could explore a couple of ways to engage members by looking at one of its biggest competitors, EB Games.

Elements of gamification are used in EB World, the loyalty program for EB Games, to stimulate specific behaviours:

Tiers: The use of a five-level tiered membership gets members engaged to climb tiers and receive better rewards.

Leaderboards: In 2021, EB Games introduced leaderboards. To qualify for Level 5 membership, members had to rank in the top 9,999 points earners.

Coalition consideration

In 2016, The Good Guys was purchased by JB Hi-Fi.

At the time this article was first published, The Good Guys had its own loyalty offer, Concierge Membership. It will be interesting to see whether JB Hi-Fi Perks may eventually expand to cover both businesses in a coalition model.

A coalition model could strengthen loyalty and encourage members to shop more frequently across the two brands instead of their competitors.

Last thoughts

In conclusion, I am still excited that JB Hi-Fi finally has a rewards program. JB Hi-Fi Perks is easy to join and offers clear benefits. These include a welcome coupon, birthday coupon and regular exclusive member discounts.

However, personalisation, gamification and the possible introduction of a coalition model may take JB Hi-Fi Perks to the next level. Those improvements could help the program stand out against competitors.
